Care Advocacy: MTA’s Care Advocates perform two core tasks.
- Provide support to young people living with HIV
- Provide risk-reduction counseling for youth who participate in the KYSS (Keeping YourSelf Safe) program.
Support to young people living with HIV: The primary purpose of this program is to make sure that young people living with HIV or AIDS are connected to care and STAY in care. Care Advocates meet clients where they are by providing support including accompanying clients to medical appointments, helping to identify the best service provider for their needs, and facilitating linkages to needed social services. Care Advocates are also experts in assisting youth in the transition from pediatric to adult medical care. Care Advocates provide a safe space for young people to obtain emotional support in dealing with life’s challenges, too. If you or a young person you know is newly diagnosed with HIV, has known their status for sometime but has fallen out of care, or just needs some extra support with their diagnosis, give us a call. To refer a client or yourself please call: 202-803-5781 and ask for Brandon Turner or Johanna Squires.
KYSS Risk-Reduction Counseling: KYSS program is an intensive risk-reduction intervention for African American D.C. females, ages 16-24, and their sexual partners. Through KYSS the care advocates support young people to lower their risk for exposure to and/or transmission of HIV and other STIs. KYSS facilitates the exploration a wide range of risk factors and the one-on-one intervention is tailored to individual needs and wants. KYSS provides education on HIV and STIs, fosters healthy behaviors, and cultivates change in substance use/abuse patterns. The KYSS program entails a screening for eligibility, intake, goal setting, and subsequent counseling sessions. Incentives are provided over the course of the program. If you or a young person you know is interested in receiving support towards safer and healthier behavior, give us a call! KYSS is a judgment-free program and we are only interested in what YOU want to change, not telling you what to do.
